EVERY household in Britain is getting £300 to help with energy bills — and here's everything you need to know about the payment.
The Prime Minister announced the cash boost in the Commons this morning, ahead of a forecast 12 per cent rise in energy prices this October. The payment will go to every home with a domestic energy account — that's around 28 million households.
When will I get the money?
The payment comes in two parts. You'll get £200 in October and a further £100 in January. The money will be paid automatically — you don't need to apply.
How will it be paid?
If you pay by direct debit, the money will be credited to your account. If you're on a prepayment meter, you'll get a voucher to top up your meter. If you pay on receipt of bill, the payment will be applied as a credit.
Is it taxable?
No. The payment is not taxable income.
What about people who don't have an energy account?
People who don't have their own energy account — for example, those in all-inclusive rented accommodation — will be able to claim through a separate scheme. Details of that scheme will be announced in the coming weeks.
Will there be extra help for people on benefits?
Yes. The Warm Home Discount scheme is being expanded. People on certain means-tested benefits will receive an additional payment of up to £200 on top of the £300 universal payment.
The total cost of the package to the Treasury is £8.5 billion. The government says it will be funded through a combination of borrowing and a one-off levy on energy company profits.
